YOU TUBE: PROs & CONs

Hi guys!
First of all, I want to thank Sarah and our English course because I finally discover what You Tube is and how it works. Sadly, You Tube is well known from the news on TV: often stupid pranks and silly tricks among teenagers are shot with mobile phones by boys and published on You Tube where everyone can watch them. Recently, parents of disabled children discovered violence and abuses on their sons thanks to videos in You Tube. Some days ago, two students used the camera of their mobile phone to shoot one of their classmates while she was ran down by a bus. The girl died in the accident and their friends published the video on You Tube. I have no words when something like that happens…
Even if You Tube nowadays is on everyone’s lips, I’m not ashamed to confess that I visited it last Wednesday in the lab for the first time. I thought it was something different: greater, more eye-catching… I don’t know but I was struck by its simplicity and its clear layout. I watched some videos: some of them are funny, others are ironic or satiric, others are quite witty and others are simply stupid and senseless. I think that this is the main danger of a video sharing tool like You Tube: you can find whatever you want there and so you have to be very careful when you’re looking for something. I mean, I don’t believe that You Tube is always a dangerous tool: the problem is that tools like it need to be used and visited with a critical eye but, often, the greatest amount of its users are teenagers or even children who are not aware of all its potentialities and its risks. So, maybe it is right that people could publish whatever they want on it, but users should be aware of it and they should remember that a critical approach is always necessary in order not to be simply enchanted by it. As far as my language learning is concerned, I think that You Tube as well can be a useful tool because in the majority of the videos people speak English and, especially, colloquial and informal English.
Before adding a comment, please have a look at the nice video I found out in You Tube. It’s a small cat waking up. It is so tender… If you don’t guess it from my choice of the video, cats are my favourite animals!
Enjoy it!

Hi Elena!
I really liked the video of the little cat..it's fantastic! Well, cats are my favourite animals too! :-)
I agree with you that YouTube can be a dangerous tool if you use it whitout paying attention, especially for children who are not aware of what there is on the Web. It’s sad hearing about students who filmed such tragic episodes (like that of the girl who was run down by a bus) and put them on the Web..I think that they are simply not aware of what they are doing and they don’t receive enough education both from their parents and the school. As you pointed out, I think that what is needed is to give people more information about what they can find on the web, enabling them to develop a critical approach.
Like you, I found YouTube very useful for our English language learning as it helps us learn a lot of colloquial expressions !
Bye!

oh my God the video is so nice! I adore cats and this one is simply... adorable!
I just read the post and I agree with you and with Silvia: YouTube is amazing and huge, I mean you can find almost everything you are looking for but this could turn out to be its weak point. People have to be aware that this kind of Websites might be dangerous as well but it's not so easy! I really can't understand how teenagers can upload such terrible videos and that lately there are millions of people ready to click on it! This is unbelievable!

Hi Elena,
I can't watch the video, I tried some times but I don't understand why I can't!!! I love cats, too: that' why I'll try to watch it in the next days!
I totally agree with you that YouTube can be a very very dangerous tool. As I wrote in my post, I think some videos should be forbidden. I think people, and above all students, should be aware of what they can do on the web!!!
However, YouTube is very useful to improve our english, as we have the possibility to hear english native speakers and learn a lot of new words,listening to the videos over and over again!!!
See you soon!
Bye bye!

Hi Elena!
I don't know how Silvia and Giada could see your video since you posted it as a photo. At least, this is what I see on my screen. To upload a video on your posts you should go on the html tab of your post and there copy the html text of the video that is the content of the 'embedded' tab you can find on the page of the video you choose. That is:
1. you open the youtube page of the video you want;
2. on the right side you'll see a tab called embedded or embedd;
3. copy the contents of that tab;
4. go to your post on blogspot;
5. open the html version of your post and paste the html of your video there;
6. click on 'preview' (or 'anteprima') and you'll see where your video is located.

If you want to change the position of the video in the post, just move 'embedded' contents where you want (after a sentence, downwards, upwards...).

However when I listened to that story I shivered...people is so stupid sometimes. I think they were not friends at all. They were fish disguised as humans.
See you on Wed!
Bye, bye!

Dear Zara,
I'm sorry that you're not able to see my video but I have just tried to see it and I succeeded. Moreover, I uploaded it in the same way you suggested me. I don't know why you are not able to watch it... maybe you click in the photo at the beginning of my post about E-tivity 7 but my video on cats is below, in the previous post.
Please try it again and if you don't succeed please let me know...
